about

The new work is a decisive shift in direction for Bravo Max and it is the culmination of three years of truly collaborative writing. Since slimming down to a trio from the previous release’s line up as a sextet, the band has also taken on a vastly different sound, going from raucous Americana to progressive rock and roll. In addition to top shelf musicianship by the backbone trio, guest performances, including baritone sax, steel guitar, Hammond B3 organ, trumpet, flute, and trombone, help to solidify the rowdy and emphatic style of the November release. Bullfighter Blues is a gritty and triumphant trip; it is a dreamy flash of instrumental psychedelia mixed with easily accessible rock and roll.

Complete Lyrics -

Bullfighter Blues by Bravo Max //

Clean Slate //
What if we started over
What if our slate was clean
What if the sky was new
What if we made believe
You look like hell
Swallow the pill
You’re going down now
Yeah and things are looking up now

Salt Stones //
I am making my brain soup
I am waiting on a homemade brew
I am soaking all my sour punch straws
Writing books about how Y2K will pan out
Pan out
And my brain keeps kicking on
On and on and on
I was raised under the salt stones
Digging ballrooms in the sand for the Prince of fleas
Leave it all out on the dance floor
Two left legs underneath the dogtooth door
Oh boy I’m swimming in circles at the top of my neck
Before I drowned I’ll find the words and I’ll write them down
And my brain keeps kicking on
On and on and on

Raise A Toast //
Now and then there comes a time
Pigs in suits lend men a dime
Paradise is just some place to hide
Dogs grow like weeds over time
Yeah their long long legs leave killer bees behind
Both of my eyes are closed
Pups are gnawing at old bones
Both sons of the new age
Are sleeping in stolen graves
Fill my ears up with ocean’s of doubt
Fill my eyes for a minute with sky born signs
Fill my hands with your breasts and say anything
Carbon seeps through my gums and I write
May your long dark nights lead you out of those wuthering heights
Both of my eyes are closed
Pups are gnawing at old bones
Both sons of the new age
Are sleeping in stolen graves
Raise a toast now the beehive’s built
Take a deep breath while your legs are on stilts
Read the paper read the wrapper read the lyrics of a National song
Smoke a Camel count the steps count the signs
But don’t count the minutes cause your watch is on time
Both of my eyes are closed
Pups are gnawing at old bones
Both sons of the new age
Are sleeping in stolen graves

Bullfighter Blues //
Take another roxy and I’m ready for the ride
God almighty jesus am I dead or alive
They could never get my head right morning to moonlight
Doctor give me speed yeah he said go and bullfight
Oh you stay close to my side
And a ferris wheel ain’t no easy ride
Jessi picked her pocket and he left with all the gold
On his way to heaven but she did not know
What in fact the preacher said about a week ago
The first are last to come and the last are first to go
Oh you stay close to my side
And a ferris wheel ain’t no easy ride
We hiked this trail together but you know me I fell
I cried away my sockets now they’re dried up seashells
Another woman leaving me yeah but oh well
I’ll run around in circles til one of my leg’s sells

Lay Low //
Lay low oh queen
Chaos abounds
Try not to make the faintest of sound
Lay low
Do not listen to those
When they speak of the end
They don’t know
Lay low eat crow where can we go
To get some more

Bee & The Boxer //
The devil is a boxer with his skin turned inside out
He jogs down to the ring to “Doo Koo Kim” always wears his welcome out
Sometimes crowds go crazy sometimes they fall asleep
Some nights even when the devil wins the fight
He bleeds and bleeds and bleeds
When the bee runs out of pollen she reinvents herself
Wears a coonskin cap and leads an army of flower
A whole army of flower scouts
Sometimes men are flowers sometimes women are their seeds
Sometimes just two thousand dry summers turns that whole lot into weeds
Hitler was a hypnotist new America’s a greedy thief
But not all good dressers are communists and not all women are seeds
Sometimes red is scary sometimes white turns black
Sometimes when you most expect the crash the train stays on those tracks

Let It Go //
Baby let it go baby let it go
It can’t control you
It’s made of porcelain
Just let it go
Baby let it go baby let it go
You just fuck around
Yeah you pay for it
Just let it go

Black Sugar //
I had a heart
Like any new seed mover
I pumped blue blood
My veins turned it into black sugar
I once was blind but now I do believe
Darkness never leaves
You gave your key to that long arm man Charlie
Way down South
These bee’s knees never shook so free little Lily
Down to your ankles

Golden Gloves //
We’re the mighty warrior’s of greed
Sailing on the seedy seas
Stronger than the stiches and steel
We don’t even know how to feel
Voices chanting sorrows and silt
Look at this shit we’ve built
Climbing on a mountain of fame
We don’t even know how to change
Nobody needs your love
Everybody knows it’s diseased
Put down your golden gloves
And come out to this black sea
She sat before my fallen mind
In shambles but behind the line
The lining keeps her slow heartbeat
I would rather fall asleep
Nobody needs your love
Everybody knows it’s diseased
Put down your golden gloves
And come out to this black sea
All you know is
Nobody needs your love
Everybody knows it’s diseased
Put down your golden gloves
And come out to this black sea
All you know is all you know
Stuck in a pen somewhere over the ocean

MI-5’s Alive (written by Third World War – 1971) //
*Original lyrics transcribed as closely as possible
They said Westminister people rejoice
You’re an honest poor man’s voice
Corner alley fury had
Pre-shot the bees and that’s no security
MI-5’s alive
They said sovereign doesn’t approve
If you’re an opinion she should move
Rolling down the royalty
If a freak shot the face that’s no disloyalty
MI-5’s alive
Let’s free the working class
We’re tired of licking the government’s ass
Let’s free the working class
We’re tired of kissing the monarchy’s ass
Letting it’s bad air out
MI-5’s alive
Let’s free the working class
We’re tired of licking the government’s ass
Let’s free the working class
We’re tired of kissing the monarchy’s ass

No Memory //
I’m just a selfish son of a bitch and you know it
Burn my lungs with cigarettes and cheap wine
My voice shows when I drink it by the bucket
Yeah it shows when I sing
I sing that cover by faces ooh la la
Ooh la la
Yeah and I’d light this house on fire just to save one poem
Why do I burn my memory
I’m just a selfish son of a bitch and you know it
Can’t take my eyes off the Texas ferris wheel
Won’t you ride it you should ride it
Won’t you ride it you should ride it
yeah just ride it you should ride it with me
These leaves are falling and that cold wind blows on you and on me
And I’d strike all the matches in the world just to remember
Why do I burn my memory
Why do I burn my memory

Shake Loose Paranoia //
You can still save my soul mama
You can make this sad hole a piece of art
You can still save my soul mama
You can make this sad hole a pretty day
Shake loose paranoia
Make a living rock and roll
Break truce start some endings
Sinking bodies plug some holes
You can still save my soul mama
You can take this black hole and shine a light
Shake loose paranoia
Make a living rock and roll
Break truce start some endings
Sinking bodies plug some holes
Hey pretty mama I’ll sell you my soul
Speak in my language yeah take me for a roll
Hey pretty mama take my problems away
Love me ‘til you’re empty ‘til you’re living under water

Shine a Light //
You can still save my soul mama
You can take this black hole and shine a light

Seizure Girl //
She shakes she jolts she curses her father
She drives her car right down that sidewalk
She loses control across lanes of traffic
She runs head first into a telephone pole
Her eyes are wide yeah you know they race around the socket
From left to right and they’re terrified
Yeah yeah she fakes her own
The fireman’s here you see him he’s just right outside her window
But she doesn’t care she says how’s my hair
Is my hair alright is my head alright
Is my hair alright is my head alright
